House churches are not anything new. As a matter of fact, the New Testament church met exclusively in houses. We even have archaeological evidence of walls being knocked down in homes so that large groups of people could meet. By leveraging homes and not constructing temples, the early church could quickly multiply with very little, if any, additional overhead or resource requirements.
Today, house churches primarily exist in areas that are hostile to the Gospel. While house churches have previously existed in the United States, that model hasn’t been the norm, and larger structures with professional clergy have been favored. Because of this dynamic, much of the teaching, evangelism, and disciple-making has been relegated to the pastor. Unfortunately, studies show that the average pastor only spends 9% of his or her work hours in personally equipping people as compared to their time spent in sermon prep (32%), pastoral care (20%), or administration (20%).
If making disciples is the Great Commission, why do we neglect doing so in favor of so many other church activities?
A house church creates a dynamic where each person is contributing to the growth of everyone in the fellowship. Members of the fellowship not only share life together, but can meet each other’s needs and hold each other accountable. We share in the growth of our worshiping body, and each member is empowered to use their unique gifts to build up each other and serve the larger Church.

We seek to not just launch one or two house church fellowships, but a network. In doing so, we believe that we can empower more believers to use their gifts and have a greater impact in our communities. While Revenant Church is based in Cumming, GA, we plan to expand beyond our town. We desire to see communities reached and lives impacted by the Gospel. Therefore, we have created a growth model that, we believe, allows us to scale as God allows.
Well-known pastor and author, Francis Chan has launched a house church network in California. The video below describes some of their activities and the resulting fruit. It will perhaps give you a glimpse into what we envision for Revenant Church.
